Hi
As some of you are making their debuts this week i wanted
to give you some last-minute advice and also share a new video we made.
Unfortunately we were unable to add the audio track with reporter commentary
due to technical issues but we hope to have it fixed soon. Meanwhile I think
the video will help you get more familiar with the commentary
procedure and the order of commands. Make sure you enable the closed
captioning (text over video) by clicking on the button "CC" at the bottom
right next to "360p". When enabled the button should be red instead of gray.

In situations when several events occur in a short period of time it's
important that you know what commands to prioritise first. Please
follow this list:
Priority 1:
. Points scored - HOME/AWAY TWO/THREE POINTS (always before game
stopped!)
. Clock start/stop - GAME STARTED/STOPPED
Priority 2
. Ball possession - HOME/AWAY BALL
. Fouls - HOME/AWAY FOUL
. Free-throws? - HOME/AWAY FREE-THROW/NO FREE-THROW
. Number of free-throws - ONE/TWO/THREE FREE-THROW(S)
Priority 3
. Time updates - X MINUTES AND X SECONDS REMAINING
. Score updates - THE SCORE IS X-X
Remember to announce:
. PLAYERS ON THE COURT and STANDBY FOR JUMP BALL before the first
quarter.
. GAME STOPPED and FIRST/SECOND/THIRD/FOURTH QUARTER ENDED at the
end of each quarter.
. HOME/AWAY BALL before the start of the second/third/fourth quarter
or after longer breaks such as time-outs.
. STANDBY FOR FREE-THROW before the first free-throw is about to be
taken (not necessary for subsequent free-throw(s) unless there is a longer
delay in between).
. TIME-OUT when the referee is calling for a time-out requested by
either team or if a TV time-out occurs.
. PLAYER INJURED when a player gets medical treatment on the court
causing a longer delay.
Always keep an eye on the referees when a player shoots from near the
three-points line so that you can announce TWO or THREE POINTS immediately
if the shot is successful, without having to wait for the scoreboard to be
updated. When a three-points attempt is made the referee will raise one arm
with three fingers stretched out - if the player makes the shot, the same
referee will raise both hands in the air with three fingers stretched out on
both.
Also look at the referees at all times after a whistle to see what call has
been made and for which team. There's often a thin line between defensive
and offensive fouls so you need to know the referee signals well in order to
call the decision early. Make sure that you have good knowledge about the
rules for fouls and free-throws to minimise delays and mistakes involving
these commands.
